A Trail-Blazing Initiative: The Origins of OpentraX

From Vision to Reality: The Origin of OpentraX

In the heart of Australia’s breathtaking landscapes, a ray of hope shines bright against the odds, redefining the core of therapeutic methods. The source of this trail-blazing initiative is OpentraX, an adventure therapy program created by Chris Higgins, a clinical exercise physiologist, adventure therapy practitioner, and visionary on a mission. Chris’s journey began in the corridors of a Saudi Arabian hospital, where his sister, Claire, developed severe brain damage due to meningococcal disease. Claire’s spirit and strength during adversity inspired Chris, planting the seeds for OpentraX.

The Mission of OpentraX

“Life can often be challenging for people with disabilities,” Chris explains with an unwavering resolve, “But at OpentraX, we believe in the ability, not disability. We are on a mission to create a world where everyone can find their track and uncover their true potential.”

Participant’s Perspective: Sarah’s Story

To truly understand the transformational power of OpentraX, we need to delve into the stories of its participants, like Sarah, who, despite her initial apprehensions, joined the program. She shares, “OpentraX is fun, honestly the best way to get therapies, and I’ve made some real friends that I catch up with outside of the programs. I’ve also learned that I can do far more than I thought and I’ve started working 2 days a week.” Sarah’s journey is a shining testimony to how adventure therapy fosters self-belief and resilience and encourages self-discovery.

Evidential Grounding: Adventure Therapy’s Scientific Basis

One of the cornerstones of OpentraX’s approach to adventure therapy is its commitment to evidence-based practice. Backed by substantial research and meticulous tracking of participant outcomes, the impact and effectiveness of adventure therapy are more than anecdotal.

Not getting the most out of my life. It’s real. We get one go at this life, I used to worry about where I’d end up, who I’d turn out to be, what I’d achieve in my life. Working with the incredible people I have in my career, I realise that life could change in an instant for any one of us, through no fault of our own. Now, instead of constantly looking ahead at the destination, I’ve become far more present to the moment. Enjoying the journey. The way I am, I know there’s always going to be plans, ideas, things that are bigger, shinier and more exciting to look forward to in life than where I am right now. My background as a High School Physical Education teacher before becoming an AEP equipped me with a strong appreciation for how different people can be, and how communication can be delivered to people in so many different ways.Working in schools and spending plenty of time involved in outdoor education programs and activities taught me that what is effective for some, is certainly not for others and that it’s me as the teacher, leader or facilitator who needs to adapt my way of communication to help that person in the way that works best for them. Someone can ask me the same question 1000 different ways and ill try 1001 different ways of explaining until I know that they truly understand it in their own way. I don’t blow up, get mad or angry…that’s a waste of my explaining energy…and sometimes I really need it!What do you hope to be able to achieve for your clients?Doing the work our team does, I’ve realised that we are doing a fantastic job of improving peoples physical capacity, mental resilience and social independence and engagement with life, but most importantly, we are building meaningful relationships with our clients, and helping them to build their own relationships with those that they want to by linking them up with other people who genuinely want friends, social connections and to live life to the fullest.
